Its partially reconstructed walls, intriguing tunnels, formidable ramparts, and imposing ancient gateways offer a tangible glimpse into the most significant Hittite site unearthed to date.   For half a millennium, from the 17th century BC until its mysterious decline around 1250 BC, Hattusha thrived as the Hittite capital. During this golden age, the city amassed considerable wealth, evident in the colossal walls, sacred temples, vast storehouses, grand palaces, and extensive libraries that were erected. ITINERARY:

Your adventure into the Hittite world begins with an 8:30 AM hotel pickup, setting off on a scenic 2.5-hour drive to the Hattusha Archaeological Site. This exclusive tour offers a comprehensive exploration of three key locations: the ancient city of Hattusha itself, the sacred Hittite sanctuary of Yazılıkaya, and the archaeology museum, which houses a remarkable collection of artifacts unearthed in the region. Prepare for an enriching and deeply immersive experience into the history and culture of the enigmatic Hittites.   The reconstructed walls of Hattusha not only provide a powerful visual representation of the ancient city’s original grandeur but also serve as an invaluable experimental reconstruction. This allows archaeologists to gain deeper insights into the construction techniques and maintenance practices employed by the Hittite builders. As a visitor, you’ll gain a profound appreciation for the architectural prowess and historical significance of this civilization, while contributing to ongoing archaeological understanding. The Great Temple in Hattusha, built upon the foundations of an even earlier settlement, showcases colossal stone blocks and a remarkably paved area featuring exceptionally large, tightly interlocked stones – some of the largest discovered within the city’s remains. Keep an eye out for the intriguing polished green stone, whose true purpose continues to elude historians, adding another layer of mystery to the story of Hattusha.
As you ascend the road, the first of Hattusha's decorated gates you'll encounter is the imposing Lion Gate. Flanked by two large, powerful lion statues, this gateway was a symbolic entrance, believed to guard the city with their strength.
Yerkapı, aptly named the 'earth or ground gate,' conceals a remarkable 70-meter-long tunnel running beneath a massive artificial hill at the city's highest point. Above this rampart lies the unusual Sphinx Gate, an impressive structure guarded by four enigmatic sphinxes flanking the two sets of doors within a tower.
Beyond the Yerkapı rampart, you'll discover the King’s Gate, distinguished by a figure carved in high relief on its left side.
Perched high within the city, the easily defensible acropolis known as the Great Castle or Büyükkale was the fortified residence of the royal family and the king's personal guard.
This unique Hittite holy site comprises three distinct areas: two natural rock chambers and a set of small buildings that once enclosed them. The sheer rock faces of these naturally formed gullies, reaching up to 10 meters in height, are adorned with extensive processions of Hittite deities and rulers – a total of sixty-six individual figures carved into the stone.
Located within the modern town of Boğazkale, this small museum houses a fascinating collection of artifacts unearthed from the excavations at Hattusha. While its primary focus is the Hittite period, the museum expertly connects the city of Hattusha to the older civilizations that preceded it and the cultures that emerged after the Hittites vanished.
